Clinical Trials
Scientists at PNDRI engage in clinical as well as basic research in pursuit of preventing and curing diabetes and its complications. Type 1 Diabetes Trials
Protégé Encore Clinical Research Study
Newly diagnosed type 1 diabetics and individuals who recently experienced their first symptoms of the disease are invited to participate in a clinical research study to evaluate an investigational drug that may help slow or even stop the progression of type 1 diabetes. Protégé Encore is led by PNDRI Scientific Director Bill Hagopian, M.D., Ph.D.
To participate in this study, volunteers must:
- Have had their first doctor visit for symptoms of type 1 diabetes and received that diagnosis less than 12 weeks before starting the study treatment
- Be 14 to 35 years of age
- Weigh at least 79 lbs (36 kg)
- Not have had certain vaccinations within 4-8 weeks of study entry
Volunteers will receive, at no cost, study-related:
- Diabetes monitoring
- Direct access to doctors or nurses to answer questions and concerns
- Physical exams and blood work
- Investigational study drug or placebo
- Glucose monitor and supplies

Type 2 Diabetes Trials
Antioxidant Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes
This study is led by Principal Scientist R. Paul Robertson, M.D., and examines whether an antioxidant taken orally will improve glucose tolerance and insulin secretion in type 2 diabetics.
To participate in this study, volunteers must:
- Be 18 to 70 years of age
- Have known diagnosis of type 2 diabetes
- Not have known intolerance to n-acetylcysteine
