Senior Research Technician – Carvalho Lab
September 24, 2021
The Carvalho laboratory at the Pacific Northwest Research Institute (PNRI) in Seattle, WA, seeks a motivated postdoctoral scholar who is passionate about genetics and the molecular basis of rare human genetic diseases. The successful candidate will be participating in several collaborative (multi-lab) projects to investigate the causes and consequences of rare and de novo mutations in the genome of patients and family members with rare genetic diseases.
You will be part of collaborative projects aimed at genotyping, and molecular characterizing the genome of patients and family members with Mendelian diseases. You will report directly to the Assistant Investigator. You will perform analysis in next generation sequencing (NGS) data (short and long reads, optical mapping) and will perform wet bench experiments involving confirmation of genomic variants of interest (structural variants, single-nucleotide variants) in DNA samples using array–comparative genomic hybridization, droplet digital PCR and optical mapping. Experience with the following techniques is needed: basic molecular biology (e.g. PCR, DNA and RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, Sanger sequencing). Priority will be given to candidates who have experience with analysis and validation of NGS genomic variants of interest. The Senior Research Technician will conduct all activities relating to process development, provide technical support for the research projects and help organizing and maintaining laboratory databases. Basic computational skills to perform data analysis of NGS is desired.
The successful candidate will be able to work independently and carry out scientific techniques, procedures and research related to research goals of the Principal Investigator. Participation in manuscript writing and scientific conferences is encouraged.
- Bachelor’s in the biological sciences or master’s degree in bioinformatics, computer science, genetics, or related field plus two or more years of experience working with next-generation sequencing data and relevant tools for bioinformatics analysis, in either a professional or academic setting.
- Enthusiasm to learn and apply new technologies in exciting research questions.
- Communication skills and ability to work independently and in teams.
- Ability to work with computational and molecular methods and tools.
- Working understanding of human genetics.
- Five or more years of experience as a Research Technician or related laboratory experience.
